What does "Chamber of Commerce" mean? Chamber means;
"a building or a place". Commerce is just another name for business. We
are "the place of business". We are where the business community comes together
to work on things as a group that they cannot do alone. We are their voice . .
. their collective muscle!
What is a Chamber of Commerce? Way back in the dark ages chambers
of commerce were literally walled places where businesses could conduct
commerce and be free from roving bandits and other dangers. The businesses had
banded together to remove an impediment to trade...getting killed! They worked
together to do things to help them conduct commerce. In Babylon in 4000 B.C.
they were trying to promote trade and find a way that a four-horse chariot
could make a turn inside the walls of the city. Economic Development and
Transportation!
The earliest role of the chamber of commerce in the United States was
in New York in 1768. It was formed to give merchants a voice in complaining
about the unfair taxation. We have a role as a spokesman for our members on
legislative (not political) activity.
Many communities have separate organizations that represent retail
activity. In areas where sales tax is permitted for economic development, that
function is separate. Many communities have separate organizations for Tourism.
We do not have those separations in Newcastle. Actually, virtually everything
we work on is "economic development" or "industrial development"... the
creation of jobs!
We also have individuals and community organizations as members. They
understand that we have and pursue an agenda of "improving the climate for
the conduct of business and removing impediments to business" and they
belong to support that agenda. Yes, we work on community issues and projects
for a better quality of life, but they are not our major objectives or
orientation.
